Here I show you how to clean a Hayward Pro-Grid , Super Star-Clear & Micro-Clear D.E. Filter. I also cover what a ripped grid looks like and how to backwash the filter properly. As with all the top manifold D.E. filters, I will show you how to clean it a very simple and easy way.
You can pull the complete filter out and take it apart and clean it but that is not necessary and leads to damage to the filter as well as your back. These filters are heavy, especially when they are water logged. I have pulled my share out over the years and taken them apart. It is the no fun way of doing it.
With that said you can do a good 90-95% cleaning with the grids in the tank. Just keep hosing until all the grids are clean. After hosing it off you will also need to backwash it to get rid of all the excess stuf on the bottom and to expel any dirt you missed.
If you have a D.E. leak watch this video or follow the instructions below.

You want to remove the top manifold and leave all the grids in the tank. DO NOT remove them. Now we want to take the partial grid out first -- the small little one and check it. After you inspect it and find it is ok or not -- replace it back into the tank along with the other grids. Then take another gird out. This is how you do it so that you can easily rebuild it. If you pull all eight grids out you are going to have some difficulty in rebuilding it. So you want to do this until all eight grids are inspected for tears. The grids all should be near or in the proper place to drop the top manifold down. Carefully put it back on over the grids. This will take some time as it is challenging. But be patient. There is no real trick -- you just need everything to be aligned perfectly and it will drop back down. You want to tighten it up good so that there are no gaps.
This pool was also very green and you can see that with the filter also as it too is very green.
